Chicken liver pâté

I’ve never made pâté before: something about it just seemed impossibly complicated in my mind. But it really isn’t hard at all. I used Nigel Slater’s recipe, it has a short ingredients list and is really quick, just a little messy (and kinda gross looking, especially those livers). The result is great though: very creamy, […]

Corn & Corn nachos

This was an experiment and a surprise. We wanted nachos, but didn’t have the ingredients for nachos, so this is what I made instead. They were so good that I’ve written down the recipe so I can make them again, and you can try them too. Not like regular nachos, but very very tasty. Ingredients […]

Grilled corn with chipotle mayo and cheese

There seems to have been an explosion of trendy mexican food in Melbourne over the last year or so. It’s a welcome addition to the culinary landscape: it’s always been really hard to find good Mexican food here. Nearly all of them serve a variation on this simple dish, and I figured it was my […]

More Japanese food! Gyoza are the Japanese take on Chinese ‘potsticker’ dumplings: usually pork, cabbage, spring onions, and other flavourings; crispy on the bottom and soft and chewy on the top. I didn’t have any cabbage, but I used some Chinese spinach. The key to authentically “Japanese” tasting gyoza is garlic and ginger (or, in […]

Zucchini fritters

I tried making zucchini fritters for the first time the other day. I did my typical first-time-recipe-research-thingy of googling around for anything to do with “zucchini fritters”, reading all the recipes, seeing what I liked, then making something up that sounded about right. All the recipes included zucchini (of course), either grated or very thinly […]

Beetroot chips with dill salt

Beetroot chips are fantastic. And beetroot and dill go particularly well together. We love the taste of beetroot chips, and I thought it was about time I tried making some at home. I started by slicing my beetroot very thinly and evenly. I suppose a mandolin would be good here, but we don’t own one. […]

Broad beans with chorizo and basil

This one is easy: title is basically the recipe. First, buy some broad beans, shell them, boil them for a few minutes, peel them, fry some chorizo (any soft chorizo will do), add the beans, then right at the end and some basil. Done!

Cheese and spinach filo triangles

I’ve got some catching up to do on this blog… these were from a few weeks ago now. So, this one’s one of those things where most of the ingredients comes out of a packet — because as much as I like making things from scratch, I’m not yet up to making my own filo […]

Baba ganoush

Home made dip time! Baba ganoush is one of my favourite dips—I love the smoky eggplant flavour, and the silky texture. It is best when the eggplants are done on a barbecue, but failing that (our failure being that we live in a small apartment with no outside space), a gas hob works pretty well […]

Sausage rolls (again) with home-made flaky pastry (again)

This time for my niece’s birthday party. I made the pastry using the “quick puff pastry” method again. I was a bit rough and quick with it this time around, and the kitchen was a bit too warm (the butter melted a bit much) – so the layers didn’t really “puff”, but it still had […]
